For the people of Turin and Piedmont, the Koelliker Hospital is a reference point for health and healthcare services.

It was in 1928 when the first historic structure, the “Ospedalino” (Little Hospital), was inaugurated, born out of the will of the Italo-Swiss industrialist Enrico Koelliker. After tragically losing his children, he decided to make a significant donation to the City of Turin with the aim of establishing a hospital for the care of children. In the 1950s, the Ospedalino, already an institution for the city, was donated by the founder to the organisation ‘Missioni della Consolata’ who still manage it today.

Over almost a century of history, Koelliker has become a high-quality multispecialty facility accredited with the National Health Service and affiliated with major private assistance organizations. The hospital’s activities involve around 200 doctors and technicians, active in 27 clinical specialties, providing over 100,000 diagnostic imaging procedures, almost 80,000 specialized visits, and surgical activities in five operating rooms and beds for regular and day surgery admissions.

Project Background: Over the years, Koelliker Hospital has initiated activities to improve and modernize its structure. To maintain the predetermined quality standards in terms of entrances and security, FAAC played a crucial role. For several months now, two FAAC automatic sliding entrances have been installed at the main entrance on Corso Galileo Ferraris, replacing a pre-existing revolving door from another manufacturer. The previous door no longer met the required functional, maintenance, and energy-saving standards.

Solution: The two automatic doors create a revolving entrance that serves as a filter for both conditioned air dispersion and pollutants. They are equipped with A1400 automation, TK50 profile, Energy Saving device, and integrated AIRSLIDE air blade, previously recognized by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) and ENEA (A government agency that promotes and researches new technologies, energy efficiency and sustainability) for their value in energy savings.

“With this solution, the entrance of Koelliker Hospital becomes larger and more welcoming for patients and visitors,” emphasizes Eng. Vincenzo Lepanto, Technical and Clinical Engineering Manager of the facility. “The double automatic entrance solution has been specifically designed for the needs of a hospital, with a high flow of people coming in and out, some of whom may have movement difficulties or vulnerabilities. Moreover, it provides environmental benefits due to the air barrier, significantly reducing thermal losses, protecting against winter cold and summer heat, and helping to drastically reduce energy consumption. The new solution also contributes to air quality by limiting the entry of dust, dirt, and insects from the external environment.”

Another crucial aspect in a healthcare facility is considered: “The new sliding automatic door adopted by Koelliker, thanks to the air curtain integrated into the frame, positioned at the entrance threshold and activated with each opening,” continues Lepanto, “provides the highest possible effectiveness, ensuring high comfort standards by reducing air drafts near the door. For our patient community, the new entrance door represents an additional small help within the care path offered by the hospital.”
